Bishop George Alencherry, the Bishop of Diocese of Thuckalay, has been elected as new Major Arch Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. The official declaration came in at 3.30 PM IST, at Mount St. Thomas, the headquarters of Syro Malabar Church, and Vatican simultaneously. The installation of the Major Archbishop will be held on 2011 May 29 at St. Mary’s Basalica, Ernakulam.
Bishop Alencherry was elected from among 46 Bishops in Syro Malabar Church in the Synod held at Mount St. Thomas, Kochi. This is for the first time the head of Syro Malabar church is elected in the Synod. The former prelates, Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil and Cardinal Antony Padiyara were directly appointed by the Pope.

Bishop Alencherry was born on 19 April 1945 at Thuruthy in Changanassery. He was ordained priest on 18 December 1972 and was ordained the bishop of Thuckalay on 2 February 1997. He graduated in economics from the Kerala University in 1965 and where he completed his Masters in Theology at Pontifical Theological Institute, Alwaye. Bishop also has a D.S.E.B. and D.Th. conjointly from Sorbonne University and Institut Caholique de Paris, France.
