Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil Passed Away

Head of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church His Eminence Mar Varkey Vithayathil, C.S.S.R has been called to eternal rest at 2 PM today in Lissy Hospital Cochin.

Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil who was born on 29 May 1927, in North Paravur, Ernakulam was the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. He is also a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

The Cardinal who was 84 years old was undergoing treatment for the last few months. Mar Varkey Vithayathil is the third Cardinal, who is elected from the Syro-Malabar rite. In his service to the god and society the demised Cardinal served as the President of Cathocli Bishop’s Conference or CBCI.

Let us pray for the soul of our Shepherd and also for the Church that we may be blessed with great leaders like him.

    Death of Cardinal Varkey is a shock to the entire world. A man of prayer and faith and one of the greatest administrators handpicked by Ven. John Paul the Great. We thank God for giving us a holy Cardinal whose life has inspired millions all over the world. May Mother of Perpetual Help, pray and intercede for Her beloved son Mar Varkey.

  2. It is really a sad news and a lose for the Indian Catholic Church. But May the Most Holy Will of the Divine Master be done...!

    Let us make a self examination whether we too are travelling in the right path in the right direction...?

    Observe (and teach others to) maintain proper body language positions while before the Lord...!
